Blue Pan Pizza co-owner Giles Flanagin told Westword that taking over a prior pizzeria should make construction and permitting easier. He and partner Jeff Smokevitch plan to bring their signature Detroit-style pizza to west Denver by mid-summer 2023.

Blue Pan began in West Highland in 2015, cooking deep dish Detroit-style pizza in the original blue steel pans once used to hold spare parts in Detroit auto factories (per Michigan.org).

“The Detroit-style pizza resonated with us. This is our homage to the origination of that pizza,” Flanagan told What Now Denver.

Though the original dishes have since been retired, the pizza’s popularity launched Blue Pan as one of Denver’s best pizzas. In addition to its Detroit deep dish, Blue Pan offers a New York style pie, a thin, cracker version, and a gluten-free option. There are also lavish appetizers like eggplant parmesan and cheesy bread and several salad openers including a Greek and a Caesar.

In 2017, Blue Pan added a second spot in Congress Park. They’ve even launched a reservable food truck for events. Now they are set to go big, taking over a 2,900-square-foot space made for family fun. There is ample parking for diners and to-go orders and plenty of space inside that leads out to a dog- and kid-friendly “badass outdoor patio.”

Permitting and subsequent construction will begin on Blue Pan Golden as soon as the team closes on the building in “about two weeks” (per Westword).
