When you think of your grandmother, a tasty brew might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But at Grandma’s House, which is expanding to add a second Colorado location, craft beer is the specialty.

Grandma’s House owner Matthew Fuerst told What Now Denver he chose the name to set his brewery apart from others. “A lot of breweries have an industrial-type feel. We are manufacturing businesses at our core, so it makes sense, but I wanted to have more of a homey, comfortable, nostalgic atmosphere,” Fuerst said. “When I was brainstorming names, that one just stuck with me.”

Grandma’s House is teaming up with Sexy Pizza inside the restaurant’s new space at 516 E. Elm St. in Trinidad. Sexy Pizza will provide food to guests, and Grandma’s House will focus on the bar. “Our part of the business will retain the name Grandma’s House, so there will be two separate entities operating in the same space.”

Sexy Pizza was looking to bring a brewery to Trinidad. “I think we were, like a lot of people, thinking about getting out of Denver a little bit more often, not completely, and Trinidad seems like an opportunity to get in on a smaller town,” Fuerst explained. “Being a bigger fish in a smaller pond and trying to build up a community instead of getting lost in a sea of a big city like Denver was what was appealing to us.”

Fuerst said that although the idea to open a second location was a little counterintuitive to him because of the hardships faced over the past couple of years, he decided to give it a shot. “Sometimes opportunities present themselves when they do, and you either take them or you don’t, and they won’t necessarily appear at a more convenient time,” he shared. “We just decided it made sense.”

Grandma’s House rotates beers on an ongoing basis. The seasonal fall/winter brew, the roasted chili stout, will be featured on tap at the new location. “That is something I definitely plan on continuing at least once a year,” Fuerst said, “utilizing some Pueblo chilis from local farms here in Colorado.”

A liquor license hearing is scheduled for next week, and if all goes well, the second Grandma’s House will open by the end of the year or sometime in early 2022. “We’re hopeful sometime in December, but with things like that, anything could happen,” Fuerst said. “At this point, it’s a little hard to tell.”

The original Grandma’s House is located at 1710 South Broadway in Denver and features an expansive patio.
