The 99ers Sports Bar will be opening at 909 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver with the mission of empowering women and expanding the visibility of women’s athletics.
Owners Annie Weaver and Miranda Spencer, who first met while playing for a competitive women’s flag football team in Denver, decided to open the spot because of their shared experiences while navigating the sports landscape as women.
“That was something we bonded over very quickly when we first met, was visibility of women’s sports and women in sports and women being successful in that world,” Weaver told The Denverite earlier this year. “It wasn’t shown, wasn’t streamed, wasn’t really highlighted. There was definitely a very big gap there. It’s getting smaller, it’s still not there yet.”
The name of the bar comes from the historic 1999 World Cup in which the U.S. women’s soccer team beat China. After the victory, the U.S. women’s team established the first professional women’s soccer team.
The sports bar will showcase and place an emphasis on women’s sports to encourage women athletes and spur interest in women’s sports. And, of course, it will serve beverages to enhance the viewing experience. Customers can expect events like sports watch parties.
Although the team initially planned a summer opening, The 99ers Sports Bar is still “coming soon,” according to its website, and it filed for an alcohol license earlier this month. It is expected to open this fall.
